How to make your training presentation a Super-Duper hit? – Have that ‘One Big Idea’ ready
Undoubtedly, it is the delivery of the content by the trainer that determines as to how successful he has been in communicating his ideas to the audience. The trainer’s expertise on the subject, his ability to articulate well, absolute clarity of thoughts, the emphasis on the key points, the extra effort that he places to make sure that the idea is grasped by the audience and the sense of comfort that the trainer manages to cultivate in interactions with the audience are the key factors that when put together, enable a “power-packed” delivery.
But besides being a good communicator, how does the trainer bring in clarity in what he wants to convey? There is a simple formula. And the formula is: Get a grip on that ‘One-Big-Idea that you want etched in the memory of the audience, when they leave the training. One clear concept. One clear take-away from the presentation. Yes. That’s what it is. Before the commencement of the training, always have that one clear take-away from the presentation established. Convey that concept more than once as appropriate during the presentation.
Another aspect of this One big idea is that it must be an important and a hard-hitting idea…something that could transform the perspective of the audience towards the subject. And herein comes the manner in which the idea is delivered to the audience. Let us look at an example. Let us say that the One-Idea that the trainer wants to convey is ‘Trust’. The trainer must first explain as to why he feels that the concept of ‘Trust’ is critical to the subject in hand. This perhaps is the most important part of the entire training. The audience must appreciate the real worth of that concept. The trainer must take extra pains to explain this central idea to the audience and get them interested. While doing this, it is helpful to use analogies from movies or famous books to get the audience interested.
I usually do this. If I am talking about trust, I would ask the following question to the audience:
‘Has anyone seen the movie, The Italian Job?’
Some might say ‘Yes’ and others would remain silent. To those who say ‘Yes’ I would pose a follow-up question:
‘Do you remember a popular line from the movie?’
Most probably there would be no responses.
Then I come out with that line from the movie, which is relevant for me. The situation is, a guy asks his very close friend, ‘Why don’t you trust me?’
To that the close friend says, ‘I trust you, but I don’t trust the devil in you.’ Then I go on to explain as why it is good to trust people, but we need to remember that their evaluation or analysis of a situation could be faulty.
Bringing a movie or a book interlude always helps.
So once you have that One Big Idea delivered correctly and clearly to your audience, the rest of the presentation has to keep this idea in the centre, revolve around it and strengthen the idea. Add anecdotes, more examples to make it interesting. Get the audience on a discussion mode, asking them to share their experiences quickly on this One Big Idea. And before your presentation closes, you would see that your training presentation is already a hit. The audience would love you for keeping a ‘clutter’ of thoughts away from the presentation and your presentation ratings would bring smiles on your face.
